Catastrophism and Uniformitarianism

Graph charts the competing explanations of geological change, the Catastrophist and Uniformitarian paradigms, illustrating their fundamental assumptions about rates of change and direction of change relative to thermodynamic equilibrium, about chaos and order — especially as this comparison furthers communication regarding the past Creation, Fall, Flood, and the future Millennium.

Manner of Creation

At issue: specifically “when” did the ‘chaos’ referred to in Genesis 1 occur relative to the beginning of the first day of Creation? Three views are illustrated:

  • Chaos after an original creation (“Gap theory”)
  • Chaos before the original creation (“Eternal matter”)
  • Chaos as the first stage of the beginning of creation (“Traditional view”)

The “gap theory” has also been called the restitution theory; the “eternal matter” view has also been called the “precreation chaos theory”; the traditional view is sometimes called the “initial chaos theory.”

Primeval Protohistories of ANE and Genesis

First chart presents the text and summaries of three ANE protohistories: Sumerian King List, Atrahasis Epic, and Eridu Genesis (Sumerian Flood Tale); second compares the basic content of these with Genesis 1-11. Second chart is based on K. A. Kitchen, On the Reliability of the Old Testament (Grand Rapids: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing, 2003), 423-424.
