Colossians Sermons - mgsThe four excerpts, each from four to eight minutes in length, are from a complete series on Colossians, delivered by Mike Sperou, Senior Pastor of North Clackamas Bible Community.

1. Lord of the Church

The first excerpt is from a sermon entitled ‘Lord of the Church,’ covering Colossians 1.17-18a:

He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. He is also head of the body, the church.

Mike explains how ‘our church life is a more fundamental reality, a more foundational reality, than our life in culture.’

2. Preeminent

The second excerpt is from a sermon entitled ‘Preeminence of Christ,’ covering Colossians 1.18b:

He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything.

Mike emphasizes that ‘in the church, Christ, who is the Lord of the Church, is to have first place in everything.’

3. Jesus as Lord

The third excerpt is from a sermon entitled ‘Lord of the Church,’ covering Colossians 2.6-7:

Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude.

Mike explains that ‘receiving Christ Jesus the Lord,’ is not just a confession; ‘Jesus as Lord’ has very practical implications; it is the foundation upon which Christ’s church is built.

4. Warning

The fourth and final excerpt is from a sermon entitled ‘A General Warning,’ covering Colossians 2.8:

See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ.

Mike explains the warning against being taken captive by teaching that is ‘according to the tradition of men’ — that reaffirms and reinforces worldly values, rather than the Word of God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
