Cities of Asia (NT)


Cities of Asia (NT) includes, first, an overview map of western Asia Minor, including a smaller context map; shows key cities of importance in the New Testament books of Acts, Ephesians, Colossians, Philemon, Revelation. A second relief map of the Lycus River Valley highlights Laodicea, Hierapolis, and Colossae.

Cities on overview include: Ephesus, Laodicea, Hierapolis, Colossae, Pergamum, Thyatira, Smyrna, Sardis, Philadelphia, Miletus, Troas, and Assos.

Cities of Lycus River map include: Hierapolis (elev. 1400′), situated on a plateau, above hot springs; Laodicea (elev. 950′), situated in the valley, close to the river; Colossae (elev. 1850′), situated in the foothills at the head of the valley. Also shown is the proximity of the valley to Miletus, Ephesus, Philadelphia, Phyrgia, and Pisidian Antioch.

The map is particularly applicable to: Epistles of Colossians, Philemon, and Ephesians. Ephesians, sometimes called the “Letter to the Asians,” was distributed here (cf. “read my letter that is coming from Laodicea,” Col 4.16).

The map is also more generally applicable to: Paul’s travels and ministries in the region of Ephesus recorded in Acts; First and Second Timothy: Timothy’s ministry from Ephesus; Christ’s messages for the churches of Asia in Revelation 2–3.
