Documentary Hypothesis: A Comparison

In addition to comparing their presentations of the Documentary Hypothesis, this chart summarizes recent studies and presents a contextual timeline.

  • Julius Wellhausen (1844-1918; p. 1877, 1878, 1889, 1897) and Richard Elliott Friedman (p. 1987, 2003, etc.): their views of the sources, dates, and origin are compared. Wellhausen’s dates, for example, range from c. 850–200; Friedman’s range from 922–450 BCE.
  • Recent studies: trends regarding the extent and date of J, E, P, and D are compared.
  • Contextual timeline: key biblical events and reigns, listed with dates, from the Exodus (1446 or 1290 BCE) through the second and third returns of exiles to Judah (457 / 444 BCE).

An English translation of Julius Wellhausen’s Prolegomena zur Geschichte Israels is available from Project Gutenburg: The Prolegomena to the History of Israel.
